A river, a shallow bay, and a tide window
Estero sits in south Lee County, on the Estero River and the east side of Estero Bay. From our Cape Coral base it is south along the coast, past Fort Myers Beach, and we come down by water. That is not a hardship out here, it is just the commute.
Estero Bay is shallow and not shy about it: oyster bars, grass flats and mangrove shoreline, water that reads completely different at high tide than at low. It was Florida's first designated aquatic preserve, and it still behaves like a wild edge of the county rather than a canal grid.
That shallowness shapes the whole job. It decides where a dock has to end to still be useful when the water pulls out, how high a lift needs to hold your boat, and which hours the barge can work. We plan around the tide instead of pretending it is not there.

The tide runs the schedule
In a shallow bay the tide is the difference between working depth and a mud flat. It sets where the dock has to reach, how high the lift holds the boat at low water, and which hours the barge can get to your pilings. Planned for, it is a detail. Ignored, it is the whole problem.
Oyster bars, flats and mangroves
Estero Bay is known for its oyster bars, grass flats and mangrove shoreline, and that is a feature right up until it is growing on your pilings. Hard growth at the waterline hides the wood underneath and shreds hands and lines. Cleaning and wraps at that zone buy more here than any upgrade above the deck.
Salt and sun, all year
Bay water is salt water, and the sun here does not take a season off. Salt feeds the borers and barnacles below the line, sun cooks boards and hardware above it. Salt-rated fasteners, honest piling depth and decking chosen for full exposure are what keep the two from meeting in the middle.
