The beach side and the dock side
Fort Myers Beach sits on Estero Island, Gulf beach on one side, back bay on the other. It is a two-water town, and only one of those waters is where docks live. The bay side is the working side, and that is the side we build on.
That bay side is Estero Bay, with Matanzas Pass running out to the Gulf. Protected compared to the beach, sure, but protected is a relative word on a barrier island. Open bay water gives wind room to build a chop, boats running the pass keep a steady wake moving, and the salt never lets up on either side of the island.
So an island build gets the conservative version of every decision: pilings set deeper than a quiet inland canal would ask for, hardware specified for constant salt, framing that does not flex when the bay gets busy. We get there the same way we get everywhere, by water, so the barge does the heavy work and nothing rolls across a tight island lot.

Salt on every side
Estero Island is surrounded: Gulf on the beach side, bay on the dock side, salt air over all of it. Hardware that would happily last on an inland lake corrodes out here, so fasteners, connectors, cables and lift components get specified for salt from day one instead of upgraded later.
Back-bay wind and wake
The bay side is calmer than the Gulf, not calm. Open water gives wind room to build a chop, and traffic heading for Matanzas Pass on its way to the Gulf keeps a steady wake rolling through. Island docks want height, stout framing and pilings that stand still when the water does not.
Storm season energy
The coast takes the season's energy first, and the island takes it before the mainland does. That is the whole argument for honest piling depth, overbuilt hardware and a lift that carries the boat high, decided in the spring rather than the week it matters.
