An island job is a water job
Sanibel is a barrier island, and the causeway across San Carlos Bay is how people get here. Docks are a different story. The dock water is the protected side: San Carlos Bay, Pine Island Sound, and the canal streets on the island's east end. Bay, Sound and canal, and they do not all ask for the same dock.
Island exposure is the part owners underestimate. Even on the protected side, a Sanibel dock takes more wind than one tucked deep in a canal grid, and it takes wake from boats that are actually going somewhere. Wind and wake work on the same places: fasteners, frame connections, and how honestly the pilings were driven.
Then there is getting there. On an island, everything about the job travels by water: pilings, decking, the crane, the crew. That happens to be how we work anyway. The barge comes over from Cape Coral and sets up off your seawall, so your build is not waiting on causeway traffic and your yard is not a staging area.

What island water does to a dock
Wind and wake come standard
The dock water here is the protected side, but protected is not the same as still. Open bay lets wind build, and the boat traffic through the Sound is real. Both load a dock at the connections, which is why island builds live or die on piling depth, frame joints and hardware that was chosen for this water.
Salt gets on everything
Bay and Sound water is salt water, and on an island the salt does not stay in the water. It rides the wind onto every bolt, bracket and lift cable you own, while barnacles and borers go to work at the waterline where nobody is looking. That is what wraps are for, and it is why cable checks earn their keep out here.
Water access is the easy part
Island jobs stall when the equipment cannot reach the work. Ours starts at the water: pilings driven from the barge, materials staged on it, the crew working off it. Nothing rolls across your lawn, nothing queues on the causeway, and the schedule answers to the water instead of the bridge.
