Why do pilings need to be wrapped in Florida?
Because of marine borers. Despite the name, shipworms are not worms. They are marine boring bivalves that tunnel through submerged wood, hollowing it out while leaving only small holes on the surface. A sealed wrap denies them access to the wood.
Do piling wraps really extend the life of a dock?
Yes, on sound pilings. A wrap protects the wood in the splash and submerged zone from borers and rot, the two things that retire most wood pilings early. It cannot reverse damage that has already happened, but on healthy pilings it can add meaningful years.
Can you wrap pilings on an existing dock?
Absolutely. Wrapping sound existing pilings is one of the most common retrofits we do, especially on older docks that were never protected. We assess each piling and wrap the ones worth protecting.
What if a piling is already too damaged to wrap?
